North Sea Port and Smart Delta Resources, together with the Province of Zeeland and market parties, have joined forces for a feasibility study into an ammonia network from the port to the hinterland in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Green ammonia
This initiative arises from the growing involvement of current and future companies within North Sea Port in the production, transshipment, storage or transit of ammonia. And also from its increasing impact on the safety of the environment. Green ammonia will play a crucial role in accelerating the energy transition. Ammonia is a very suitable carrier of hydrogen and will be used to import green hydrogen from various countries. In addition, ammonia will be used as a sustainable fuel and raw material.

For safe transport
Part of the imported ammonia will be locally converted ('cracked') back into hydrogen. Another part of the ammonia will be transported to the hinterland via pipeline networks. Inland shipping and rail potentially play a role here. Given the possible impact on safety and the relatively limited capacity of these hinterland connections, the feasibility of an ammonia network is being investigated. The research therefore focuses on the feasibility of an ammonia network from the port and includes a market exploration, safety frameworks, spatial impact and route explorations. This research will provide insight into the careful development of ammonia transport with different modalities. The research contributes to the policy and safety framework for hydrogen carriers that is currently being developed.

Ready for the summer
The goal is to have the research ready for the summer of 2024. Various research parties have been invited to participate.
